Powers and Abilities
An Omega Level mutant
Jean Grey is an omega level mutant with vast and potentially limitless psionic power directly related to telepathy and telekinesis. Over the years Jeans power have fluctuated mostly due to her connection with the Phoenix Force. Due to this connection and her concern of what her friends think of her, Jean has consciously hampered her powers to keep the Phoenix consciousness from overshadowing her humanity. Since the first manifestation of the Phoenix, whenever Jean decides to tap into her own power and use more than she gnormallyh does, there is fear of a rogue Phoenix manifestation also known as Dark Phoenix.
Jean's telepathy is powerful enough (on her own) to accomplish feats deemed impossible by her mentor, Charles Xavier. She had created psi bolts powerful enough to overwhelm the mystical protection of Juggernaut, and transfer her mind so completely that even her telekinesis has gone along for the ride. This transfer of telekinesis had happened twice in her career, once when she took over the body of Emma Frost (a powerful telepath) and another when she took away the telepathy of Psylocke (another powerful telepath) and replaced it with telekinesis. Jean has used her telepathy to enhance both physical and energy based mutations to very high degrees allowing the mutants receiving the enhancement to use their power indefinitely while she absorbed any negative stimuli that would hinder them normally, with little affect to herself. Jean has all the basic telepathic abilities, mind reading, mind control, psi bolts ectcbut unlike many telepaths she can also read the minds of animals even if they are near death (ravens, dogs, dolphins.). Her telepathy is so sensitive that she can sense things that other telepaths canft. She sensed a Shifar invasion in the presence of Emma Frost, even though the Shifar were specifically shielded from Jeans power. She is also responsible for the initial contact with Scott Summers, whom Xavier could not sense without the use of Jeans telepathy. Jean has also been able to use her telepathy on the immune to telepathy diamond form of Emma Frost three times. As a side affect of her telepathy Jean has a photographic memory. Jeans can use her telepathy to stave off death and has ushered her friends back from the brink.
Jean's telekinesis is also very powerful. At the height of her power it is believed by her peers that anything that she did as Phoenix is well within Jeans grasp as the gGreenh Phoenix and Dark Phoenix were the force expressing Jeans full mutant potential as a psi. Jean on her own has displayed the ability to keep Avalon aloft, manipulate 50 tons of debris to uncover survivors she sensed and keep nano-tech from completing ites task..
As her secondary mutation manifested Jean seemed to be able to not only control matter, but also began to probe it on a molecular level, able to know the elements it was composed of and even sense things that came into contact with it. This was called a manifestation of the Phoenix, but was still considered to be just Jean as the Phoenix had not ghatchedh yet.
Soon after Jean reached the apex of evolution, becoming fully bonded with the Phoenix, her mutation being classified as the ultimate mutation, her blood so potent that it can confer gtelekinetic godhoodh upon those injected.
In her current state Jean is one with the Phoenix and as itfs avatar is itfs equivalent to an M-body used by the abstracts. She can know operate from the heart of creation which is outside all know time and space and borders all things from the material to the imagination. Jean can effortlessly absorb entire timelines into this space and manipulate whole universes atom by atom. She can also project her telepathy to any point in space and time. She has also shown that she can create the afterlife for lives claimed by the Phoenix. She can now allocate the power of the Phoenix as she wishes, granting and taking it away as she sees fit.
After merging completely with the Phoenix Force, Phoenix is now able to create cosmic fire and flames at will, an ability known as Cosmic Pyrokinesis. Cosmic Pyrokinesis is the ability to create, control, and manipulate cosmic flames, flames which are not dependent on oxygen. The source of Phoenix's cosmic flames derives from her ability to manipulate matter at the atomic level, which allows her to generate intense heat, combustion and concussive blasts by stimulating heat molecules, or simply from her access to cosmic energy, or by combining both powers at once to create more powerful cosmic fire. When using these flames offensively, she burns her victims at the molecular and sub-molecular levels; thus no ashes or other combustive by-products are produced. Her cosmic flames are different from flames that are usually created by common pyrokinetics (like Sunfire or the Human Torch). Because her flames are not dependent on oxygen, she can create cosmic flames under seemingly impossible conditions like underwater or even in the vacuum of space. When using her Cosmic Pyrokinesis, the flames usually manifest in the shape of a large fiery bird, a Phoenix. Phoenix, however, has complete control over her cosmic flames and can shape them however she wishes; as a fireball, fiery claws, or even the appearance of an ordinary fire. The pain caused by these flames can be either mental, physical or both simultaneously. Although her cosmic flames (particularly when augmented by the Phoenix Force) are powerful enough to destroy entire galaxies, Phoenix's control over them is so complete that they only harm what she chooses harm, which she calls it "burn away what doesn't work"; thus, her cosmic fire will burn her enemies until they die or she extinguishes it by her own will, and it has no effect on her clothing or anything around her vicinity.
Bio:
Jean Grey is a founding member of the X-Men, and former love of Scott Summers aka Cyclops. An omega-level telekinetic and telepath, Jean has gained near limitless powers as a recurrent host of the Phoenix Force.
Creation
Jean Grey was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared under the code name Marvel Girl in X-Men #1 in 1963. Jean was the original sole female member of the X-Men team, so was a regular part of the team during their publication. She first just possessed the ability of telekinesis, years later, writers decided to give her telepathy. The writers explained that this was a suppressed ability, that remained dormant during her teenage years.
During the first appearance of the 'Phoenix', created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in the 1980's, there was going to be changes made in the story. Initially, Chris Claremont and John Byrne planned to have Jean lose her powers, but Byrne's plan to have her destroy a solar planet was picked instead. However, this worried the Editor- In- Chief, Jim Shooter because he felt that allowing Jean to live at the end of the story was not acceptable due to the fact that she murdered billions of people, which could be a bad ending form a reader's point of view. However, Jim Shooter and the other writer were able to come to an agreement several years later and made the story arc ' The Dark Phoenix Saga' of which Jean calls upon the Phoenix to help her save her friends. Origin
Jean Grey was the youngest daughter of Professor John Grey, at Bard College History Department in Annandale-on-Hudson, and his wife Elaine Grey. Jean was playing with her friend Annie Richardson when Annie was struck by an automobile. The experience of the accident caused Jean's telepathic powers to manifest and she linked with her friend and experiences her death first hand. She was so disturbed by this that she slipped into a catatonic state for three years because she could not control her new abilities.
When Jean was eleven, a psychiatrist suggested to her parents that they consult Professor Charles Xavier, who was a telepathic mutant. Professor X informed Jean and her parents that Jean was in fact a mutant, a possibility that her parents had never even considered. Professor X brought her to his school in Westchester County New York, Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. He then taught her how to operate Cerebro. Jean then, in the form of the Phoenix, touched Scott Summers' mind as he slept in an orphanage. Unable to handle the growing psychic noise inside her head, Professor X dampened Jeanfs powers using a series of psychic blocks, so her telepathic powers would only manifest at levels she could handle as she matured. When Jean reached the age of 13, she started to manifest telekinetic powers, and Professor X began instructing her in their use.
Character Evolution
X-Men
When Professor X declared that Jean had reached mastery of her powers (her telekinesis), he recommended to her parents that they should enroll their daughter in his school. The Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters, presently known as the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, was secretly a school for mutants, and also serves as the X-Men's headquarters.
Jean became the fifth member of the X-Men and the first woman to join the mutant team. The other members of the team were Scott Summers (code named Cyclops), Henry McCoy (code named Beast), Warren Worthington (code named Angel) and Bobby Drake (code named Iceman). Jean
herself took the code name Marvel Girl.
The team became active in fighting other mutants (and humans) who threatened peace on the planet. As time went by, the team's relationship grew tighter and they came to think of themselves as family. The original X-Men remained together saving the world for many years, and they became renowned for their exploits. Unfortunately the X-Men were never accepted by society the same way other superheroes were due to public fear and distrust of mutants, and this prejudice has ever remained a problem throughout the team's history.
Jean fell in love with her X-Men teammate Scott Summers (Cyclops). Both of them were very shy and slow to show how they really felt for each other, but they eventually revealed how much they both loved each other. Later, when Professor X recruited new students into the school, the other original members, except for Cyclops, left the school to follow their own paths. Cyclops continued his relationship with Jean. Jean at that time worked as a swimsuit model while Cyclops worked as a radio announcer. Their relationship survived countless challenges, finally leading to their marriage.
When the alien force named Z'Nox attempted to invade the planet, Professor X needed to take aleave from the X-men (leaving the ill-fated Changling to take his place) and was forced to release most of the psychic shields on Jean, allowing her telepathic powers to resurface (although at the time it was explained that Professor X had given her a part of his own telepathy and then it was later retconned). He hoped, due to her current maturity level in addition to his years of tutelage and training, that she could handle the amount of power she now had access to. Professor X was then believed to be dead (actually the Changling in Xavierfs place) so Jean then took on some of the roles he used to fulfill. She continued to use her telepathic and formidable telekinetic powers to aid the X-Men.
New X-Men/The Phoenix
When the original X-Men team left for a mission to Krakoa, leading to their capture. Professor X was forced to recruit another team of mutants to rescue them. First he brought in Moira MacTaggart students (which included Darwin, Petra, Sway and Kid Vulcan (who was secretly Cyclops and Havokfs younger brother Gabriel) however this team was quickly dismantled and thought completely destroyed by Krakoa. Krakoa then released Cyclops to bring more mutants to feed on which led to Xavier bringing together yet another group of mutants, this time including Storm, Wolverine, Banshee, Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Thunderbird. This team became known as the New X-Men and they along with Cyclops, Sunfire and the rest of the original X-men defeated Krakoa. Following this, Jean and the other members of the original team left to allow the new team to take over, but not Cyclops, who believed that he belonged with the X-Men. Scott's decision upset Jean. However, Jean held on to her connections with the X-Men, especially being best friends with Storm and her relationship with Scott.
During a romantic night for Scott and Jean, three X-Men (Jean, Wolverine and Banshee) ended up being abducted by the Sentinels. They were taken to an orbital Starcore platform under the command of the anti-mutant activist Steven Lang, who planned to unleash a new generation of Sentinels. The Space Station was then wrecked during the rescue mission made by the other X-Men and Dr. Corbeau, which led to them having to abandon the station immediately before it was destroyed. They escaped the space station aboard a space shuttle. Unfortunately the auto-pilot was damaged during the battle and there was one of the worst sunflares in history occurring so someone had to manually fly the plane while everyone else was in the shielded compartment in the back of the shuttle. Jean volunteered and telepathically absorbed the knowledge of how to fly the shuttle from Dr. Corbeau. She was counting on her telekinetic power to shield out the radiation from the solar flare long enough for her to safely pilot her friends to earth. Upon re-entry, Jean's psionic shields were overcome and the radiation from outside began to eat away at her body, slowly killing her. With the last ounce of her strength she cried out for help and was heard by the Phoenix Force.
The Phoenix offered to save her but told her that she would need time to heal because her body was already far more damaged then her mind would allow her to realize. Jean accepted the being help and with that the Phoenix Force took a small piece of her essence and created a copy of Jeanfs body for itself. It also took Jeanfs withered and damaged body and placed in inside a healing cocoon. Meanwhile, the shuttle was crashing down into Jamaica Bay right outside JFK Airport. One by one all the X-men swim up from the bottom, except Jean. Just was Cyclops is trying to go back down after her the water begins to glow and gJeanh (in reality the Phoenix but no one would know this for a very long time) burst from the water and flew in the air wearing a brand new costume (neither of which she had done before, fly or create a costume from thin air).
Phoenix then rejoined the X-men on several missions including traveling to the Shifar galaxy where she single handed fixed the damaged MfKraan Crystal which had been unleashed by mad Shifar Emperor DfKen. Lilandra took note of the power help by the mortal Jean Grey and was already concerned but held her worry for the sake of her love, Professor X. During a battle with Magneto, Jean and Beast believed the rest of the X-men to be dead so Jean decided to head to Dr. MacTaggartfs facility on Muir Island. During the trip to Muir Island, she experienced the first of her time slips, where she was her ancestor Lady Jean Grey heading to America with her companion Jason Wyngarde. During the debacle with Moirafs son Proteus, this happened again just long enough to allow her to be taken out by the mad mutant.
Dark Phoenix
Following the defeat of Proteus and the reunion of the X-men, the entire team returned to the mansion. They soon got two new reading on Cerebro regarding to new and potentially very powerful mutants. The team was split in half and Jean went with a group of X-men to find the new mutant in New York City. While searching for the new mutant at a nightclub Jean found herself once again in one of her time slips. This she was at her own wedding to Jason Wyngarde and then she is unveiled to everyone gat the weddingh as the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club. She snapped out of her vision in the middle of kissing Wyngardecwho was really there kissing her in the nightclub! Before she or Cyclops can react to this, Dazzler, the new mutant, comes out on stage and starts singing. Turns out that she is the clubfs act and uses her light powers to gdazzleh her audience. Meanwhile outside, Nightcrawler receives a phone call from Kitty Pryde, the other new mutant detected in Chicago, saying that the other half of the team has been captured just as Nightcrawler is attacked by someone in full body iron armor. Inside, Cyclops and Phoenix Are also attacked by the armored foes, who seem to have weapons specifically designed to negate their powers. With Dazzlerfs help they defeated the enemies and the four mutants leave to go help their team mates. As they leave Cyclops see Jason Wyngarde on the street and notices that his shadow doesnft much his body.
In Chicago, the team rescues Kitty as she is about to be captured by Hellfire Club operatives. She informs them the rest of the team has been captured by Emma Frost, the White Queen of the Hellfire Club. This strikes a chord in Phoenix as she remembers that the Hellfire Club is the group of people in her timeslips. With the help of Kitty and Dazzler, the rescue the rest of the team while Phoenix and the White Queen have a psychic duel that seemingly kills the White Queen.
The team decides to rest before taking the fight to the Hellfire Club. They decide to convalesce at Angelfs New Mexico Aerie. During this sabbatical, Jean took off Cyclopsf visor in order to see his eyes. He initially get scared but she tells him its fine because she is telekinetically holding back his blasts. The couple enjoys the moment but Cyclops is worried about how much power Jean has and can she control it.
The team infiltrates the Hellfire Club with Angelfs help. Soon after arriving, Jean is swept away into another timeslip by Jason Wyngarde. As Jason begins to escort, Cyclops goes after them and suddenly recognizes Wyngarde as their old enemy Mastermind. He is too late though because as he persues them he is struck down by Phoenixfs energy blast, she is now the Hellfire Clubfs Black Queen. The noise of the attacked sets off the battle as Storm and Colossus confront the clubs leader Sebastian Shaw while Wonverine fights Harry Leland and Nightcrawler confront Donald Pierce. After a quick battle the entire team is defeated and Wolverine is thought dead. As the Hellfire Club toasts their new Black Queen, Wolverine rises from the sewers vowing revenge.
As Wolverine is dismantling Hellfire troops in the basement, the rest of the team is still trapped and Jean is stuck in one of her timeslip as the Black Queen. Cyclops decides to reach her through the telepathic rapport they share. As he enters the astral plane in her mind he finds the landscape and motif are still that of the Hellfire Club and he finds Wyngarde waiting for him in Jeanfs mind and challenges him to a psychic duel. Meanwhile Wolverine is tearing through the club looking for his teammates. As the psychic duel rages on Cyclops finds himself at a severe disadvantage to Wyngardefs sword skills and is killed. In the real world Cyclops falls to the floor seemingly dead.
Cyclops survives the psychic but just barely. Unknown to the Club though, the shock of seeing Cyclops die on the astral plane broke Mastermind hold on Jean and she is in her right mind now. When Wolverine breaks into the room she uses the distraction to releases the helmet holding Cyclops optic blast back. Cyclops uses his blast to free the rest of the team and they quickly have the entire Hellfire Club on the ropes. As Mastermind is escaping , he encounters Phoenix alone in the hall and as revenge for invading her mind she opens his mind up to everything. This shuts down his mind and he falls to the floor. As the X-men are leaving in their plane, the building power within Jean becomes too much and she becomes the Dark Phoenix and blasts the plane to pieces.
Dark Phoenix quickly defeats the X-men and leaves for space, creating a stargate to transport her across the galaxy. She goes to the nearby DfBari system and plunges deep inside its sun, consuming the entire star and destroying the nearby inhabited planet. A passing Shifar cruiser sees the destruction and attacked her but she is too powerful for them and annihilates the entire ship as it is alerting Lilandra about the attack. Following this assault, she returns to earth.
Jean returns to her parentfs house in the middle of the night and they and her sister come downstairs to see her. They are frightened by her strange costume right off the bat and Jean canft help reading the fear and apprehension in their thoughts. Unable to help herself, she lashes out at her family with her powers. Then a thick fog rolls in suddenly signaling the arrival of the X-men so she goes outside to confront them. She is quickly fitted with a Mnemonic Scrambler designed by Beast to scramble her powers and give them a fighting chance. After a brief battle, Dark Phoenix overloads and melts the scrambler off her head and quickly decimates the team as Professor X and Angel arrive. Professor X confronts her and a battle between psychic juggernauts begins. Despite her overwhelming power, Dark Phoenix eventually loses to the older and more experienced Xavier and he places psychic breakers on her power (much like when Jean was a child) to limit her power back to Marvel Girl-like status. Jeanfs family runs outside and just as everyone thinks the danger has passed all but the Grey family are teleported away.
Battle on the Moon
The entire team (including Angel and Beast) appear onboard a nearby Shifar Cruiser and are confronted by the whole of the Imperial Guard and Empress Lilandra. Lilandra tells them that in any form at any power level Jean Grey is too dangerous to live. Professor X challenges her to a battle between the opposing teams for Jeanfs life, which she begrudgingly accepts. The X-men spend the night each preparing for the upcoming battle in their own way. Jean asks Cyclops if shefs really worth it after everything she did as Dark Phoenix. He says that he will stand by her no matter what happens. The next day both teams are transported to the Blue Area of the Moon and the battle begins in earnest. The X-men put up a good fight but the Imperial Guard is too powerful and the each fall one by one until Cyclops and Jean (dressed as Marvel Girl) are the only ones remaining. After a brief respite in an nearby alcove, they spring to action taking on the entirety of the Imperial Guard alone. They last for a few moments and then as Scott is struck by a blast, the shock overwhelms Jeanfs senses and the psychic breakers in her mind and she transforms into the Phoenix again. Lilandra orders the Imperial Guard to take her down at any cost even if they have to burn the moon and Professor X, realizing things have gone too far, orders the X-men to do the same. Scott calls out to Jean (still in her green Phoenix outfit) but she runs from the battle before she becomes Dark Phoenix. Cyclops catches up to her in an alley, but she is now dressed in her Dark Phoenix attire. She tells him she can feel Dark Phoenix coming up in her and she canft control it. She tells him she loves him and then activates the nearby trap killing herself.
Following this gdeathh on the moon the Phoenix Force was returned to its natural state and realized what it had done. It returned to earth to return the stolen lifeforce to the real Jean Grey, but the essence was tainted by the evil done by the Dark Phoenix and Jean rejected this piece of herself. This piece of Jeanfs essence found a home in Madelyne Pryor and brought her to life at almost the exact moment of the Phoenixfs death on the moon, but the real Jean continued to lay dormant at the bottom of the bay for several more years to come.
Resurrection/X-Factor
Many years after Jean's death, the Avengers discovered the cocoon containing her body, which had been resting on the ocean floor off the coast of Jamaica Bay. Not realizing what it was (they thought it was another creation of the Hive such as Adam Warlock and Kismet), they brought it to Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four for further study. Jean then woke up and emerged from the cocoon, but could not remember anything of her death or resurrection as the Phoenix. The Avengers and the Fantastic Four helped her to recover her memory of the escape from the space station and her rescue by the Phoenix. Jean also discovered that she had lost her telepathic powers, but that her telekinetic abilities had grown even stronger (not quite Phoenix levels but she could now fly). Upon hearing of Jeanfs resurrection, Scott left Madelyne and their baby in Alaska to see her. Jean and the other founding members of the X-Men had an emotional reunion. She then became aware of the rising anti-mutant movements in the country and could not believe that the existing X-Men team had actually begun working with Magneto. So the five of them decided to form a new mutant team called X-Factor and Jean herself went back to her original code name of Marvel Girl.
Goblin Queen
Meanwhile, Scottfs child was missing and Madelyne had begun working with the X-men (who the world believed to be dead). After months with the X-men, Madelyne made a deal with demons and began gathering power as the Goblin Queen. When she discovered that Jean had returned and that Scott was with her, she began editing the information that the X-men saw so they only saw the bad news about X-Factor and had no idea that Jean was alive. All of this came to a head when Madelyne made a grab for power by turning Manhattan into the image of the demonic Limbo using her own son as the catalyst. When the X-men and X-Factor finally meet they battle, as a result of Madelyne media tampering, but quickly assert their differences to combat Madelyne and the greater threat of Mr. Sinister. After Madelynefs death in her final psychic battle with Jean, Jean finally absorbed back the piece of herself that the Phoenix had taken. However, with that piece of herself now came all the memories of the Phoenix and Madelyne.
All these memories made Jean feel more and more like her life had just been stolen away from her. So when Scott finally proposed to her, she refused. All the memories of his marriage to Madelyne made her feel like they may not even be all her own feeling anymore. She was further upset to meet her daughter from an alternate future, Rachel Summers, since clearly that meant she had to marry Cyclops and have a daughter at some point.
Shortly before the original X-men returned to the team, Jean telepathic powers were restored by an encounter with the Dark Rider named Psynapse.
After this the team reunited with Professor X to fight the Shadow King who had taken over Muir Island. After this battle Cyclops, Jean, beast, Iceman and Archangel all returned to the X-men
Return to the X-Men, Marriage and the Future
Just after her return to the X-Men, Jean was involved in a massive Sentinel attack on the Hellfire Club which left the White Queen comatose. Just as the Sentinels were about to kill Jean herself she was able to transfer her entire mind and psyche into the unconscious body of Emma Frost. A few months later, Jean proposed to Scott herself, having decided that she was ready, and he readily accepted. Married at last they also accepted Rachel, their daughter from a parallel reality, into their lives. Unfortunately, just after the wedding Rachel was sucked into the timestream to save her teammate, Captain Britain. During their honeymoon, they were pulled into the future by and aged Rachel (now Mother Askani) to raise Scott and Madelyne's son Nathan Summers (after he had been sent to the future by Cyclops years earlier). When they returned, Jean took on the new codename of Phoenix in honor of the entity and Rachel since she was believed to be dead. Not long after Jean also adopted the original green Phoenix costume and manifesting a gfirebirdh effect when she used her telekinetic power. It was revealed that Rachel was only missing due to events that happened along with Apocalypse's premature death.
During the Onslaught ordeal, Onslaught confronted Jean and told her that he could show her Professor X's hidden memories, including his affection for her. He also told Jean that he could give her back the power of the Phoenix Force.
The Twelve
Apocalypse captured the twelve most powerful mutants whom he believed would determine the fate of humanity. The Twelve included both Jean and Scott. Using a machine, Apocalypse was able to absorb all of their powers, making him immensely formidable as he tried to pour all his essence into Nate Grey, who would be a limitless never ending vessel for him. Then, the powerless Scott Summers shoved X-Man away from Apocalypse to prevent the creation of an all power entity that they could not stop. The two beings fused and then disappeared for months. Most of the X-Men believed that Scott was dead, except for Jean and Cable. With the combined efforts of Jean and Cable, they were able to separate Scott from Apocalypse.
Power Switch
Jeanfs teammate Psylocke needed help dealing with the Shadow King stuck inside her head. Somehow when Jean tried to help the two women switched powers. Jean lost her telekinetic powers but absorbed Psylockefs telepathic powers and added them to her own already formidable telepathic abilities. Jeanfs telekinetic power eventually return while Psylocke also retained her massive TK upgrade.
Morrisonfs New X-Men/Death Again
Eventually, the mansion reopened as the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning with Jean and Scott as its Headmaster and Headmistress. During this time Scott began having telepathic therapy sessions with now X-man Emma Frost which led into a telepathic affair. Jean caught them during this and this caused major trouble for the couple. When Emma was shot and her diamond form shattered by Esme Cuckoo, Jean was able to reconstruct her on a molecular and restore her to life. Months later during an attack by Magneto, Wolverine stabbed Jean to spare her dying in an explosion. This gdeathh brought her back , fully assuming the Phoenix persona. When they returned to Earth, Magneto unleashed a massive electromagnetic pulse through her body giving her a gplanetary scale strokeh. Wolverine beheaded Magneto (later revealed to be an imposter anyway) as Jean died in Scottfs arms. Jean lived on in the White Hot Room of the Phoenix (thought to be the center of creation), and while watching her own funeral, she telepathically nudged Scott to move on and be happy with Emma.
Phoenix Endsong
In the Phoenix Endsong story arc, the Phoenix Force formed and was assaulted by a Shi'ar warship, which caused it to splinter throughout the galaxy. The Shi'ar also planned on killing Jean Grey as they believed that Jean was the heart of the Phoenix.
During the Phoenix's arrival on planet Earth, it discovered that Jean was dead. With full determination to resurrect Jean, it consumed her body and forced her to dig herself out of her grave, and hence Jean was resurrected. Neither Jean nor the Phoenix Force were truly prepared for this resurrection, which caused the Phoenix to quickly go insane and become the Dark Phoenix. Jean stated that the resurrection was wrong and the entity was "sick, blind, and has forgotten."
The X-Men started formulating tactics on how to contain the Phoenix Force, but things went from bad to worse when the mutant Quentin Quire ( Kid Omega), who had a notable crime history, returned with plans to resurrect his dead girlfriend Sophie Cuckoo using the Phoenix entity. The Shi'ar then arrived as well and planned on killing the Phoenix while she/it was still unprepared and weak.
The X-Men encountered Jean at the North Pole, where Logan would repeatedly attempt to kill her. When Wolverine confronted her and asked if he is talking to Jean or the Phoenix, she replied "I am always Jean Grey and always the Phoenix." Phoenix managed to regain control of herself and her sanity and sealed herself in ice. Phoenix then used Cyclops' optic blast to empower herself. Emma Frost then attempted to fool the Phoenix by telling the entity that Scott no longer loved Jean. Phoenix was momentarily distracted by this, which allowed Cyclops to quickly trap himself, Emma, and Phoenix in a Phoenix Egg Containment Unit created by Beast. Emma then offered herself to the Phoenix Force, and was immediately consumed by it.
Kid Omega then appeared, broke open the containment egg, and asked the Phoenix fragment to bring Sophie Cuckoo back to life, which the Emma Phoenix did. Although Kid Omega had succeeded in his goal, Sophie decided to stay dead rather than return to life to be with Kid Omega, since she was still disgusted by him and his previous actions. Meanwhile, Emma Frost was still consumed by the Phoenix Force after being inhabited inside the Phoenix Egg, but because she was only an Alpha Level mutant (unlike Jean Grey who is an Omega Level mutant), she was not capable of joining with the entity for long. To save Emma's life, Jean Grey forcibly separated Emma from the Phoenix. The Phoenix was surprised that Jean was able to accomplish this feat without any assistance. Jean then stated that she and the Phoenix were one and that she would always be the Phoenix. Cyclops then instructed the Stepford Cuckoos and Emma Frost to link all the X-Men together telepathically to sustain the Phoenix 's sanity. As they were helping her to keep her sanity, Jean Grey/Phoenix transformed itself into the White Phoenix.
But then the Shi'ar created an event horizon and Cyclops found himself "somewhere" with the White Phoenix. She then asked Scott to show her his eyes and they both bathed within his optic blast. After Cyclops awoke, he found himself and the other X-Men alive and back on Earth, but Jean Grey was nowhere to be found. Jean is currently dead, again.
Other Relationships
Angel & Wolverine
Jean also dated Warren Worthington III ( Angel), causing confusion about Jean's real feelings towards Scott and the aforementioned X-Man. This led to some arguments between the two X-Men, both of whom admired Jean.
After joining the X-Men, Wolverine also fell in love with the telepathic mutant. Even though his love for Jean was intense, he would respect Jean's choice and love for Scott. Jean would talk to Logan about her marital problems and Logan helped the couple reconcile.
Professor X
At some point, due to the bond they've shared since Jean's childhood, even Charles Xavier developed a greater affection for Jean. The Professor decided to keep it a secret, since he felt that Jean would reject him due to his physical handicap and because he was her longtime mentor. This affection led Charles to transfer his powers to Jean at one point, and to also leave the Institute after her death. Onslaught revealed that Xavier had affections for Jean when he invited her to tune into the Professor's hidden thoughts.
The Color of the Phoenix
Jean believed that every color of the Phoenix has a special meaning. While dressed in a White Phoenix outfit, Jean surmised that there were three phases of the Phoenix: Green being good, Red being evil, and White being unknown to her at that time. Later, during the Phoenix: Endsong saga, she discovered that the White Phoenix meant that she and the Phoenix Force were one in the same. She eventually became White Phoenix of the Crown, the strongest version of the Phoenix Force yet seen.
